Ph.D. candidate in Engineering Mechanics, with additional experience in automotive safety research. Experienced in the mechanics, damage evolution and non-destructive evaluation of composite laminates, especially using Acoustic Emission. Proficient in performing mechanical experiments, data analysis, statistics and digital signal processing. Skilled in computer programming.

Seeking full-time positions where my background in composite mechanics, wave propagation and data analysis can be applied in new and challenging areas. Eager to diversify and expand my research experience by investigating and exploring new research areas and problems.

  • Ph.D. Candidate — Major: Engineering Mechanics
    Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (formerly Engineering Science and Mechanics), Virginia Tech.
    Aug 2007 to Present.
    • Dissertation: Monitoring Progressive Damage Development in Laminated Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials.
    • Adviser: Dr. John C. Duke, Jr.
    • Interests: Ways to improve understanding of performance, health state and failure of in-service components. Wave propagation, Structural Health Monitoring, Acoustic Emission (AE).
    • Experiments: Study composite specimens, with different ply-layups, under monotonic tensile load and slow speed cyclic load, to monitor damage development and health state.
    • Signals / Sensors: Acquire signals from spontaneous AE waves and simulated Pencil Lead Break sources using two piezoelectric ultrasonic sensors simultaneously.
    • Data Analysis: Implement statistical and various data analysis techniques (e.g. Wavelet Analysis) in MATLAB software to identify methods for improving health monitoring in composites.
  • Graduate Research Assistant — Center for Advanced Automotive Research
    Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, Virginia Tech.
    Jan 2011 to Present.
    • Responsibility: Provide research and data analysis expertise in multiple projects related to transportation safety, human factors engineering and connected vehicle systems.
    • Sensor Fusion: Assess utility of vehicle-mounted Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) for dead reckoning and sensor fusion applications. Implement adaptive digital filters for noise reduction and improved data accuracy.
    • Connected Vehicles: Identify root causes and characterize problems with implementation of next generation Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication and crash avoidance systems using data collected from vehicles undergoing pilot testing.
    • Gap Acceptance: Design and fine-tune video data reduction protocols to analyze traffic intersection scenarios. Analyze reduced data to study driver preferences about rejecting gaps while merging into traffic. Provide statistics and visualization of analysis results.
    • Turn behavior: Model speed and path of vehicles turning through intersections, based on movement and geometry parameters, to help with crash reconstructions. Study driver behavior during left turns in presence of oncoming vehicles at different distance ranges.
    • Authorship: Authored and co-authored project final reports, research proposals and white papers. Revamped and modernized the VTTI central MATLAB code repository, and wrote documentation for using MATLAB and Mercurial with the VTTI systems.

Teaching Experience

  • Graduate Teaching Assistant — Instructor Engineering Science and Mechanics Department, Virginia Tech. Aug 2007 to Dec 2010.
    • Instructor for ESM 3064: Mechanical Behavior of Materials lab for 7 semesters and multiple lab sections each semester. Responsible for assessing student performance, grading lab reports and assigning final grades.
    • Provide theoretical foundation for experiments. Help students with conceptual understanding of theory and practice of the experiments. Lead the setting up and running of experiments by students.
    • Mechanical testing experiments involved using, among others, Instron and MTS universal testing machines, different hardness testing machines, and Charpy notch-impact testing machines.
